Most of you have redeemed your library certificates!  I hope you enjoyed shopping at the library store.  If you forgot to come and shop, there is just one more chance to redeem your certificates this year.  Call the library beginning Wednesday, September 1st and set up an appointment to shop by catalog.  You can make your choices and then pick up your order on Friday, Sept. 3rd.

The Senate and Assembly will be working over the next few weeks to resolve the differences.  Library supporters all over the state have been telling the NYS Legislature how they feel about the proposed cuts and we are being heard!  Please consider adding your voice to support libraries.  See how you can help!  Click on the VOTE button to send your message to your state legislator.  It is critical that library advocates contact their state legislators and urge them to reach and agreement that provides the best level of funding for libraries possible.

Flying Fish

Family Program

Tuesday, July 13, 20 and Tuesday, August 10 and 17, 7:00-8:30 pm.


 

At this program kids will make their own cartoon flying fish sculpture. The fish are made from paper mache clay and then painted with acrylics. This program is recommended for ages 8 and up. Note: There is a $3.00 material charge, per person. Registration is required.

As part of Dutchess Watershed Month the Pawling Library proudly presents two important films: "After the Storm" and "RiverWebs," Most of our population is unaware of the wetlands that surround them. To fully maintain and preserve our priceless water supplies will require more than government involvement. Citizens must become aware and take an active part in the protection of our nation's water resources. "After the Storm", co-produced by EPA and The Weather Channel, takes a look at three examples of the interconnections between water supply, water quality and the economic vitality and quality of life in our communities.  Running time: 22 minutes. "RiverWebs", is a documentary about the intricate life and science of streams. This film examines an international group of river ecologists who share a story of tragedy, growth and recovery. Running time: 57 minutes. Seating is limited.

Please join us for a soothing hour of guided meditation. Release the stress of the day as you learn how to calm and heal your mind and body through this healing practice. Please bring a mat if you like and wear comfortable clothes.

Wednesday, July 21, 28 and Wednesday, August 4, 11 and 18, 2:00-3:00 pm.

 

Help us to bring back some of the fascinating life that existed in the oceans millions of years ago. Participants will be divided into teams of four to create a kronosaurus, nothosaurus, elasmosaurus and ichthyosaur out of large sheets of painted card board. The artwork will be on display within the library during the entire process. This program is recommended for children ages 9 and up. Registration is required



Sea Monster ShadowPuppets

Family Program

Thursday, July 27, 7:00-8:30 pm.


 At this family program kids  will make their own scary creature from the darkest depths of the seas. Shadow puppets are lots of fun. Join us and make some fun at the library this summer! This program is recommended for ages 8 and up.  Note: An X-Acto knife might be needed to cut out hard to reach areas which only the presenter is permitted to handle.  There is a $2.00 material charge, per participant. Registration is required.

The Library Board of Trustees is changing and we need new trustees to fill vacancies and new positions. If you love our library and you'd like to see it grow and improve, please consider joining the PFL Board of Trustees.

    Trustees are needed to nurture links to the Pawling community and to develop forward strategies for the Library. They also develop and manage fund raising projects. Please contact Bob Reilly by email or call Verna Carey at (845) 855-5626.

    The Library also needs volunteers to help at the Library itself but also to help with other Library support projects; such as the PFL Annual Book Sale (a year round project), the upcoming Holiday Booksale and several new projects being considered.

    We also have a Friends of the Library group forming. Our Friends group will plan special events that help support the library in many ways. If you are interested in joining, you can contact Karen DeGennaro to add your name to our growing list of dedicated Friends.

    This changing of the lights is a big win for the Library and the Pawling community in at least three ways. These low-wattage fluorescent bulbs use much less power and last longer than regular incandescent bulbs and, unlike earlier flourescent replacements, these contain no mercury so that they can be recycled when it is time to replace them.

    Doing the Math:
    PFL Trustee Frank Sinisi replaced 27 bulbs throughout the library, including in places where the lighting had been reduced to save costs. Now all the dim corners are beautifully lit.

    Six of the bulbs replace the little 50 watt floods over the desk with fluorescent that put out just as much light but only consume 14 watts of power. Two more bulbs provide similar savings and an additional 19 large incandescent floods save 65 watts each. That makes a total of 1523 watts -- 1.5 kilowatts -- saved during every hour that the library is open.

    Add in savings for less heat in the summer and the savings due to longer life of the bulbs and you can see that this is a significantly "green" step in every way.
