HIGH SCHOOL REVIEWS

Before I Die
by Jenny Downham
Have you ever wondered what you would do if you were told you only had a few more months to live? In this book 16-year-old Tessa is confronted with just that reality.
In what could have turned into simply a sad book about death, the author avoided this trap and turned Tessa's story into one filled with life and adventures! Tessa is no saint, and gives her parents much grief, but she lives her life, the little she has left, the way she wants to do it! And do it she does! While time is her enemy, life is not.
Tessa's legacy is one of living each moment the best way possible. It is an example of how to be grateful for the life you have while always seeking to improve it. It also gives some great examples of how to be there for those you love who have such a fate. It is a beautiful story.

Hope In Patience
by Beth Fehlbaum
This is a superbly written book about 15-year-old Ashley who was a victim of physical and sexual abuse by her step-father. Written from her perspective, her story is a compelling one that takes the reader on her journey toward healing and moving forward. With the love and support of her dad, a stranger until this occurred, her step-mother, therapist and new friends, Ashley becomes the person she was destined to become and a true survivor!

This novel deals with those issues as well as those all teens must navigate, including peer pressure, dating and how to succeed in school. An interesting side issue deals with the politics of education and what can and can't be taught in our schools, as well as why.

This is such an insightful and thoughtful book, I would recommend it for anyone or everyone, teens and adults. Extremely well written, it should become a classic!
~Susan, grade 11

The Hunger Games
by Suzanne Collins
Futuristic America has collapsed and been replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, a lottery is held to choose two young representatives to participate in The Hunger Games. These games, used partly to control the poor masses and partly to entertain the wealthy capital residents, are broadcast throughout Panem as the participants use wit and skill to survive.

In the lottery drawing, sixteen-year-old Katniss volunteers to replace her younger sister Prim and is sent as the female representative from the mining district along with the male representative, Peeta, the son of the town baker.

The characters in this book are realistic, and absorb readers in their struggle to survive as they strike alliances and friendships to gain advantage. Fans of reality shows will love this book. It's completely engaging and impossible to put down!
~ Jewel, grade 9

Insatiable by Erica Rivera
It is amazing what people can do to themselves in an attempt to feel better. Erica, the author, leads us down the path to her long-term battle with anorexia with enormous clarity and honesty. After reading her story, it almost appears that her struggle was inevitable. However, what it is was not inevitable was her climb out of that abyss. This is a book for any woman or man who struggles with self-respect and appreciation for all that they offer to others. One does not have to be perfect to be valued and loved, a lesson Erica learned the hard way.
